First shovel of soil for extension infocenter Holten

On Monday a big shovel of sand marked the official first step for the extension of the Information Center Canadian Cemetery Holten.

Trees

The new building covers about 175 square meters, and will be realized behind the existing center. AGL Contractors cut down the necessary number of trees for this last week. A power shovel stood ready last Monday to dig the symbolic first hole. Alderman Roland Cornelissen, who called this venue an important attraction in our municipality, took this task on him.

Dream

But it is a special moment for the Holten group of friends who at one day took the initiative to realize their dream : an information center next to the Canadian Cemetery. Albert van derMaat, spokesperson for the foundation had never even dreamt that, only a few years after its opening, the center would have outgrown its present space.

Construction ready

“A memorable day. We are very happy and proud that the construction was officially started by the alderman. In the next couple of weeks the site will be made ready for construction. A meeting room will be built there so that we can better host children and schools without interrupting the other visitors.The existing building will be refurbished as well.The office space will have to make way for an experience room. Construction will take some months. Our plan to build in an energy neutral way, with solar panels and a heat pump, is still open for inspection. We may have to use gas to heat the place during the first year”, says van der Maat.
